Savage Press will be publishing a 2nd book
of Diana Randolph's art and poetry titled
Beacons of the Earth and Sky in 2012.

Diana will be a co-host of the following: Second Sunday Poetry Reading
Sunday, October 9, 2011- 2 p.m. at Drummond Public Library, Drummond, Wisconsin

Featuring poets from Northwest Wisconsin who have poems published in the 2012 Wisconsin Poets (Desk) Calendar.
Bring a poem or two to share prior to the featured readers. Refreshments will be served following the reading. Calendars will be available for purchase.
This free event is sponsored by Drummond Public Library, CHARAC (Cable Hayward Area Arts Council) and WFOP (Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets.)

Practicing Calligraphy

Spend the day practicing calligraphy, an elegant form of writing, focusing on the Italics style – Chancery cursive. Then use calligraphy to create lettering and border designs for your own projects such as poems, notecards, quotes, etc. You may also combine calligraphy with drawings using ink and color pencil, not watercolor pencil. Calligraphy comes from the Greek words, “kalos” meaning “beautiful,” and “graphos” meaning “writing.” It is a meditative practice which may improve one’s own natural handwriting. There’s a supply list for this class. Class size limit: 14.

Drawing Birds

at Cable Natural History Museum, located on County Hwy M in downtown Cable, Wisconsin.

Express the subject of birds, inspired by your own photographs and museum specimen. The instructor will lead exercises in quick sketches - gesture drawing; contour - line drawing and shading to make the subject matter appear three-dimensional. We will work with black and white materials in the morning and color in the afternoon. Use your favorite medium such as pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, color pencils or watercolor pencils. This class is coordinated to go along with “The JOY of Birds - Feathers in Focus” exhibit at the Cable Natural History Museum. You will have the opportunity to view the exhibit which has the theme “Birds bring us JOY through their beauty, uniqueness and our interactions with them.” Marvel at the moments caught in professional photographs, learn to identify local birds by their songs, and have your curiosity tickled by interactive displays. This class is open to all levels of experience. Class size limit: 14. There is a supply list for this class. Participants may bring a sack lunch or lunch may be ordered in class from the Brick House Cafe.

Pastels - Exploring Color
Monday, November 7, 2011 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at Cable UCC Church, located on County Hwy M, downtown Cable.

Explore the element of color by using the color wheel to understand hue, value and intensity. You will create small - 5 by 7 inch pastel paintings as exercises using a limited palette of pastel sticks (dry pastels, not oil pastels) to create harmony in your paintings on paper. Learn or practice using complementary colors to emphasize your focal point; and select analogous hues for harmony, using your own landscape photos as inspiration. Gain an understanding of how colors affect each other. The instructor will share information from the books: An Eye for Color - The Story of Josef Albers by Natasha Wing/illustrated by Julia Breckenreid; and Color by Betty Edwards. This class is open to all levels of experience. Participants may bring a sack lunch or lunch may be ordered in class from The Brick House Cafe. There is a supply list for this class. Art: Pen & Ink - Design a Notecard
Monday, April 2, 2012 - 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Hayward WITC - located on Hwy 63 and 77, Hayward, Wisconsin

Explore methods of pointillism, contour and cross-hatching; create small value scales then create a notecard design in this one-day workshop using your own photos for inspiration. You may bring your drawing to your local print shop at a later date to make copies for your very own cards to mail to family and friends. This class is offered for participants who are at beginning, intermediate or advanced levels with the medium of pen & ink. Learn a new skill or practice techniques you may already know. There is a supply list for this class. Please bring a sack lunch and beverage.
